Hamburger Steaks in Creamy Mushroom Gravy with Mashed Potatoes
This is one of those dinners that makes everything feel a little softer around the edges. The kind you make when you want comfort food that’s not trying too hard — just honest, cozy, and wildly satisfying. You’ve got tender hamburger steaks with those browned, savory edges, tucked into a creamy mushroom gravy that smells like butter and garlic the second it hits the heat. And underneath it all? A fluffy pile of mashed potatoes ready to catch every bit of that sauce.
It’s warm, hearty, and the sort of meal that turns a regular night into a “let’s eat at the table and actually enjoy this” kind of night. If you’re craving something soothing and rich (but still easy enough for a weeknight), this one delivers.

Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1 ½ pounds ground beef (80–85% lean)
⅓ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil (for searing)
For the Creamy Mushroom Gravy:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups beef broth (low sodium)
½ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for extra depth)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
2 pounds Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
½ cup milk or heavy cream
¼ cup unsalted butter
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1) Start with the mashed potatoes.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15–18 minutes. Drain well. Mash them while they’re still hot with butter and milk (or cream). Season with salt and pepper. Cover and keep warm.
2) Make the hamburger steaks.
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently—just until everything comes together. Form into 4–5 oval patties.
3) Sear for flavor.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and sear for about 4 minutes per side until browned. You’re building a crust here, not fully cooking them yet. Transfer to a plate.
4) Cook the mushrooms.
In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté for 5–6 minutes until they’re browned and tender. Stir occasionally and let them get those golden edges. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
5) Turn it into gravy.
Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir until everything looks coated. Let it cook for 1–2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and bring to a gentle simmer. Stir in the heavy cream and Dijon mustard (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
6) Simmer the steaks in the gravy.
Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top. Cover and simmer on low for 10–12 minutes, until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the gravy is thick, creamy, and glossy.
7) Serve while it’s hot and cozy.
Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates. Add a hamburger steak. Pour that creamy mushroom gravy over everything. Finish with chopped parsley.
Presentation
For a really comforting, “diner-but-better” look, make a little well in the mashed potatoes so the gravy settles right in. Add a few mushrooms on top of each patty, then sprinkle parsley for color. A final crack of black pepper makes it feel extra special. If you want something fresh on the side, a simple green salad or steamed green beans balances the richness perfectly.
