Classic Italian Lasagna
There are certain dishes that feel like a celebration the moment they come out of the oven — and classic Italian lasagna is one of them. It’s the kind of meal that fills the whole house with the rich scent of simmering tomatoes, garlic, and bubbling cheese. The kind that makes everyone wander into the kitchen asking, “Is it ready yet?”
Lasagna isn’t just dinner. It’s comfort layered between pasta sheets. It’s Sunday afternoons, family gatherings, second helpings, and maybe even sneaking a forkful straight from the pan. With its hearty meat sauce, creamy ricotta filling, and golden blanket of melted mozzarella, every bite feels warm, satisfying, and deeply comforting.
If you’ve been craving something cozy and timeless, this is the recipe to make.

Ingredients
For the Meat Sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef
½ pound ground pork
1 small onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
For the Ricotta Layer
1 ½ cups ricotta cheese
1 large egg
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
¼ teaspoon salt
For Assembly
9 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)
Instructions
1. Start with the Meat Sauce
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and let it cook for 2–3 minutes until soft and slightly translucent.
Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. You’ll smell it immediately — that’s when you know it’s ready.
Add the ground beef and pork. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat if needed.
Now stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Lower the heat and let the sauce gently simmer for 20–25 minutes. Stir occasionally. The sauce will thicken and deepen in flavor as it cooks.
2. Prepare the Ricotta Mixture
In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan, parsley, and salt.
Mix until smooth and creamy. This layer adds that soft, rich contrast to the hearty meat sauce.
3. Preheat and Prepare
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
4. Layer the Lasagna
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the dish. This keeps the noodles from sticking.
Lay down 3 lasagna noodles.
Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Add a layer of meat sauce, then sprinkle mozzarella on top.
Repeat the layers two more times: noodles, ricotta, sauce, mozzarella.
Finish with a final layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan on top. This is what will melt into that beautiful golden crust.
5. Bake to Perfection
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
Then remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden in spots.
The edges should be gently bubbling — that’s your sign it’s ready.
6. Let It Rest
As tempting as it is to cut into it right away, let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes. This helps it set and makes slicing much easier.
Garnish with fresh basil just before serving.
Presentation Tips
Slice with a sharp knife and lift pieces out carefully with a spatula to keep those layers beautiful.
Add a small basil leaf on top of each slice for a fresh pop of color.
Serve on white plates to make the rich red sauce and golden cheese stand out.
A drizzle of good olive oil or a light dusting of extra Parmesan just before serving adds a lovely finishing touch.
Pair it with a crisp green salad and warm bread, and you’ve got yourself a truly memorable meal.
