Golden Southern Fried Chicken with Creamy Mash and Gravy
Some meals just know how to comfort you. This is one of them. Crispy, golden chicken tenders with that craggy, seasoned coating… piled next to a cloud of buttery mashed potatoes… and then finished with warm brown gravy that sinks into every nook and cranny. It’s the kind of plate that makes the whole kitchen smell amazing—like peppery frying chicken and buttery potatoes—and honestly, it feels like a hug you can eat.

This is perfect for a cozy weekend dinner, a “treat yourself” weeknight, or anytime you want real-deal comfort food that makes everyone quietly happy at the table. You’ll hear that little crunch when you bite into the chicken, and then the creamy potatoes and savory gravy come right behind it. Pure satisfaction.
Ingredients
For the Chicken Tenders
1.5 lbs chicken tenders (or boneless chicken breasts sliced into strips)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Mashed Potatoes
2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
1/4 cup unsalted butter
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Brown Gravy
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups beef or chicken broth (low sodium is great)
1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
Salt and pepper, to taste
For Garnish
Chopped fresh parsley or chives
Instructions
Marinate the chicken.
In a bowl, stir together the buttermilk and hot sauce (if using). Add the chicken strips and turn them around so they’re coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Longer is even better if you’ve got time.Start the mashed potatoes.
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain well.Mash them up.
Mash the potatoes with warm milk and butter until smooth and fluffy. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and keep warm while you finish the rest.Mix the dredge.
In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Give it a good stir so the seasoning is evenly mixed through.Coat the chicken.
Pull the chicken from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off. Press each strip into the flour mixture until well coated. Set them on a wire rack for a few minutes—this helps the coating cling and crisp up beautifully.Fry until golden.
Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry the tenders in batches so the pan doesn’t overcrowd. Cook until crisp and golden, about 4–5 minutes per side. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towels to drain.Make the gravy.
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, until it turns a warm golden color. Slowly whisk in the broth (a little at a time at first so it stays smooth). Add soy sauce if using. Simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened, then season with salt and pepper.Assemble the plates.
Spoon mashed potatoes onto each plate. Pile on the crispy chicken tenders. Drizzle generously with warm brown gravy. Finish with parsley or chives for a fresh pop.
Presentation
For that cozy “diner-style” look, make a little swirl in the mashed potatoes with the back of your spoon, then let the gravy pool right in the center. Stack the chicken tenders slightly off to the side so you can still see that crispy coating. A sprinkle of green herbs on top makes everything look extra inviting (and a little more “I totally meant to plate this nicely”).
